Tom Clancy est un écrivain américain né le 12 avril 1947 à Baltimore (USA). Ses romans qui appartiennent au genre « techno thriller », sont très bien documentés et habituellement basés sur l'intelligence militaire américaine, et en particulier la CIA, avec la guerre froide ou le terrorisme comme thème principal.

Tom Clancy c'est aussi un grand nom du jeu vidéo, car son imagination est souvent prise à partie pour développer des nouveaux jeux, dont il est le co-créateur. Il a travaillé avec Red Storm Entertainment (développeurs de Splinter-Cell et Rainbow-Six...) et édité par Ubisoft.

Depuis son enfance, Clancy était intéressé par le monde militaire, mais n'a pas participé à la guerre du Vietnam, à cause de sa mauvaise vue. Ses études de littérature ont fait de lui un écrivain de talent, mais sa situation financière de l'époque l'obligea à travailler dans une agence d'assurance.

Cependant, sa passion pour les romans lui a permis d'écrire un livre inspiré d'une histoire vraie à propos d'un sous marin soviétique et de la CIA. Ce livre s'intitule The Hunt for Red October, et a été un succès mondial et a réellement lancé la carrière de Tom Clancy.

Plus tard Clancy publiera Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears (La Somme de toutes les peurs), qui ont connu un très grand succès, au point d'être adapté au cinéma !
