After spending a year on the bench, NBA 06 comes back featuring an interesting new wrinkle. However, Sony's game still isn't refined enough to warrant a spot in your starting lineup.

If there's one thing that NBA 06 is suited for, it's on-the-go gameplay. The fast-paced nature of the game-almost to the point that it's an arcade-style basketball game-works very well if you want just a few quick bursts of NBA action here and there. While you don't have to worry about the overly technical details of basketball, there are still some features in here to keep you honest. Passing has to be done with some care since computer and human opponents are pretty adept at picking the ball out of passing lanes. The shooting mechanics aren't completely out of control either; you still need to have somewhat precise timing to make a crisp, clean shot, though the window for a proper jump shot does seem to be pretty wide open.
